Kerry’s eye accident

11/06/2007

Kerry had an accident while working on the bathroom this weekend.  He was using a circular saw and hit a nail.  He usually wears safety goggles when cutting but did not have them on this time.  A small piece of the nail ended up in his eye.

His vision was blurry but after a while he thought maybe  he scratched his cornea.  He washed his eye out and continued working on the bathroom for a few more hours with his dad. They headed off to the hardware store for supplies and the sun was unbearable. Kerry’s eyes watered and he could not keep them open. He told his dad to drive and eventually said “take me to the emergency room”

The doctor looked into his eye and said “Well done! what did you do  ? ” - The sliver of metal went all the way through his eye and stopped at the back of his eye- 90% through.  They had to call in the eye specialist, who decided this would require eye surgery to remove.  Kerry could still see out of the bad eye relatively well- a bit blurry but not too bad.

Kerry had to go in for surgery the next day.  That night was terrible for him- His eye swelled and burnt when he shut it and the pain medicine made him sleepy so he had trouble falling asleep without being able to shut his eyes not to mention just the pain of having a piece of metal cut through your eye and sit there.

It was a mission getting the triplets packed away in time to get Kerry off to Surgery.  Luckily his Dad was nice enough to drive down from Madison to bring him back home afterwards.  The surgery is not for the faint of heart. (you may not be interested in this part ) While awake (but numbed up) they stick a long needle into his eye to work the piece out. It makes me queasy thinking about it. It didn’t seem to bother Kerry- he complained more about the discomfort afterwards than the fear of surgery before.

The surgery went well. The next day (today)  Kerry went back in for post op appt. They took the patch off. He said this was the most difficult part-  He anticipated his vision would be blurry for a while as it was before the procedure, but now he could not see a thing. They did an eye test and he couldn’t even make out the chart let alone the letters on it. This should get better though it is due to the accident, stitches (yes he has stitches in his eye) and swelling.

He has a lot of medicine, 3 eye drops for pain, infection and something else, an ointment for his stitches and pain pills. He cant drive at all for a few days and cant drive at night until next week.  He is supposed to rest and hopefully the swelling will go down .

Only time will tell if his vision will be back to 100% .  He has a followup appt next week, but unfortunately the stitches have to stay in for 2-3 weeks.  The stitches cause such discomfort and at times pain. He says it’s just like you have  a small pebble under your eyelid- every time you blink you notice it and it hurts. If your eyes are closed it causes discomfort and when his eyes are open its difficult because he cant see a thing out of his right eye.  He has been using a patch on his eye just to cover up the blur. He has been sleeping a lot. The pills knock him out we hope he gets better soon.

I told him he is more work to take care of then Lilly -  I have 5 babies to care for now !

I told Kerry he is done with the bathroom.  I’m sure some of you saw the post of him falling through the ceiling a few months back.  I will need an ambulance standing by if he decides to work on it some more! Luckily he is taking it all well.  He said there is always a positive side- he got to watch most of the the Packer game from his room in the ER without babies screaming in the background.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Update on the Girls

10/18/2007

Hi there everyone, I haven’t been on here for a while, so busy, its unbelievable. Anyways, I am so happy to have all of my little blessings no matter how hard life has become! I just wanted to write really quick while I have a few seconds to myself…The girls are doing great! They all are gaining weigh.

Katie who has always been the lightest was the heaviest last week, now Emma is the heaviest. Alyssa looks the biggest, but believe it or not she is the smallest now. We had to switch her to a different formula because she was not doing well with the carnation.  She is eating less, but feels a lot better now.

Today the Nurse came (I love her, she is the best). She comes once a week and weighs them. Alyssa is now 9#9oz, Katie is 9#15oz and Emma is 9#11oz and Lilly is a whopping 38#…So my girls are getting bigger and cuter each passing day! They are also smiling sooo much, its so cute, especially Alyssa, if you smile at her, she gives you the biggest smile ever. They are such happy babies. Well, that is all I have time for…Got to go back to work. I hope to write again soon.

P.S. I wanted to say a special THANK YOU to my very good friend and wonderful volunteer Robin, I don’t know what I would do with out her! She is so special to all of us! Thanks Robin

Auntie 911

09/17/2007

(Kerry Here)

The girls are doing great.  On Friday we were having some issues. Jenell and I were just exhausted and the girls were very fussy and we hadn’t had a break in a while. For me the hardest part is the monotony. Feeding the girls and changing them isn’t so dificult, but for me doing it over and over again is the hard part. The fact the I have the attention span of a small child doesn’t help either.

Jenell called her Aunt Elayne (who has helped us so much already) to tell her the date of the girls baptism. Naturally Elayne asked  “how is it going?” Jenell said “to be honest not good”. Elayne said “I’m packing my bag I will be there in 2 hours” !! (she lives 2 hours away) Jenell argued and said that is not the reason she called.  Elayne said ” your not going to convince me otherwise I will be there in 2 hours.”

Needless to say-  Jenell’s aunt is amazing. She is such a good person and she is so good with babies! I slept in yesterday and I feel great ! Refreshed and ready to go on. She couldn’t have come at a better time.  I was going loopy myself and Jenell was about to lose it too

Elayne let us sleep in, she let us get out of the house,  she even fed all three girls by herself a few times ! Thank YOU !!!

Triplets doing good, parents tired.. UPDATE

09/10/2007

(Kerry Here)

Alyssa, Emma and Katie are doing well. Lilly is great- her vocabulary is amazing and she is putting together sentences. Yesterday I had to put her in the naughty corner- she was crying(mostly fake) and she said “Daddy- Lilly wants to say “I’m Sorry”"… she said it 3 times, with a strong emphasis on “I’m Sorry”. Regarding the triplets, we still feed them every 3-4 hours. They are taking 4+ ounces per feeding. Today we gave them baths.

Other than the triplets’ baths- I gave Jenell a well deserved break and fed and changed the girls all day today by myself. The morning was really tough. I woke up for the 8 am feeding at 7:30. the prior night I helped Jenell with the 12-1 feeding and Jenell took the 4-5 am feeding alone. So I got a full nights sleep.

From 7:30am-8am I did the following:

  • made the bottles
  • emptied dishwasher
  • loaded the dishwasher
  • took a 5 minute shower
  • changed Lilly
  • Got Lilly dressed
  • Made Lilly an eggo
  • ate a piece of toast
  • stared out the window at a shiny metal object for 44 seconds
  • tidied up the nursery area from last night
  • took out the garbage
  • changed the girls diapers
  • kissed the girls and said good morning
  • changed Emma’s sleeper because it was wet

Then I fed them and changed them every 3 hours for the rest of the day/night. I also made dinner, wrote this blogpost and took the trash out to the road. I Tivo’d the Packer game and watched the good parts in between feedings.

Also..My little green riding lawnmower that I use to take the trash out and pick up sticks and stuff died. It really sucks- Last year I bought a 52 inch zero turn mower, because the little green one took me like 3 hours to mow. So I have two riding mowers- a few months back I built a trailer/deck (that I was quite proud of!) for the green mower and have since used it to haul the garbage out etc.. anyways its completely dead- blue smoke and kaput. I guess its not a bad thing to walk the trash to the road ! but it is a long driveway , like 330 feet and we have a LOT of trash now. Took me like 4 trips with the recyclables. Anyways I’m tired and rambling.

The girls are good- The parents are tired. ALSO — We’re going to go pick up our dog “Colby” this week. Jenell’s mom (who lives nearly a full hour away :) ) has been nice enough to watch him for us this whole time. And we sincerely appreciate it. Unfortunately she doesn’t have time to read this blog :( (and I thought I was busy with triplets !!) so we will thank her in person. Unfortunately we rarely ever see her in person, because the drive is just too long for her and she has troubles with her car. It’s too bad because she is missing out on her triplet grand daughters and they are growing up before our eyes! We will have to thank her in person when we go to pick up Colby.

Off to bed

Thanks to Bobbie,Kelly and Ben

09/05/2007

Bobbie, Kelly and Ben stopped by for an overight visit during labor day weekend.  We really had fun spending time with them and they were a great help with the girls.  It’s also just nice to have a break and to talk with adults ! Kerry also had a good time making a video game on the computer with Ben

Once the girls get bigger we really want to make a trip up to Eau Claire for a visit.

The girls are doing great. We are both very tired, but its worth it ! We took the girls shopping today , they slept the entire time.  It was nice to get out.  Pictured below- Ben and Emma

Thank you so much Chris for that great treat, you are welcome here anytime.

On top of all of this, she also helped me out a lot before the girls came, she went out of her way to get items for me on local groups and brought them here and even payed for some of them! We cant thank you enough, thanks..
